Mr. Spoden visits Schleissheim

The 45th Inf. Div. approaches from the north towards Schleissheim and then bypassing the village directly towards the air field. At the edge of the wood the German unit of Mr. Spoden, Mr. Braun, and Mr. Christoph are prepared to surrender unconditionally to the oncoming GIs.

War Ends 2007. In spite of the enormous work and precise planning to be done the 2 day event could be kept secret from the guests of honour. And the surprise was complete. When the team of the advance guard approached, Mr. Spoden could hardly believe his eyes. The GIs under the command of Master Sergeant Blaschke once again accept the surrender of Mr. Spoden near the Berglwald. (The "Berglwald" is the wood between the villages Oberschleissheim and Unterschleissheim.)

The two protagonists of the event Mr. Spoden as surviving member of the I NJG 6 and Master Sergeant Blaschke of the 45th Inf. Div. close by the Berglwald after the surrender.

Mr. Spoden amidst friends, Master Sergeant Blaschke, Mr. Christoph an a charming medic officer of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Spoden, Mr. Christoph, and Mr. Braun are captured by Master Sergeant Blaschke and his soldiers and are escorted to the vehicles to be driven to the Unterschleissheim city hall.

Mr. Spoden takes the opportunity to exchange information with the author of the historical monograph, who as an accessory is also put in a car and driven to the Unterschleissheim city hall without further ado.

In spite of all military strictness there has to be time for war correspondent of the life magazine Major Blaschke. So the arrest is interrupted and replayed until the picture is in the can. CHEEESSEEEE !!!

Heavily armed the GIs move off and take Mr. Spoden in a Willys Jeep to Unterschleissheim. The weapons are non functional facsimiles.

Through tough territory next to the wood back in an open Jeep.

At the city hall the U.S. Army is greeted by the population waving white flags and the city is surrendered without a shot being fired. Mr. Spoden and his son are surprised and impressed by the soldiers. Whatever they expected it surely wasn’t such a display of GIs.

The city is taken so all active members of the event have time for a group photo. Most impressing with the vehicles in the background. Contemporary witnesses state that the GIs seem to have a horrible accent and permanently chewing gum didn’t make conversation easier. Some passers by assumed the GIs might even be emigrants from Schwaben, Niederbayern, Oberbayern, Munich, Wuerttemberg…

To surrender the village to the U.S. Army represented by the 45th all participants are hold captive in a small room in the Heimatmuseum. Here orders are given by the mayor of Unterschleissheim, Mr. Zeitler, Mr. Christoph, Mr. Braun and Dr. Poetsch. The final remarks are of Mr. Spoden who heartily thanked all of the organisers and participants of this wonderful event.

Exactly 62 years after War Ends.
